What is an Image Flip Tool?

An image flip tool mirrors a photograph or graphic across an axis — either horizontally (creating a left-right mirror image) or vertically (flipping it upside down). Flipping is different from rotating: a horizontal flip makes the left side become the right and vice versa, as if you held the image up to a mirror. ToolsWallet's image flip tool uses the browser's Canvas API to perform this transformation instantly — your image never leaves your device.

Horizontal Flip vs Vertical Flip

↔ Horizontal Flip (Mirror)

Reflects the image left-to-right. The left side becomes the right side. Also called a “horizontal mirror” or “left-right flip”.

Common uses:

  • • Create mirror selfies for Instagram
  • • Fix selfies where text appears backwards
  • • Create symmetric design compositions

↕ Vertical Flip (Upside Down)

Reflects the image top-to-bottom. The top becomes the bottom. Also called a “vertical mirror” or “upside-down flip”.

Common uses:

  • • Correct upside-down scanned documents
  • • Create reflection effects for water scenes
  • • Fix incorrectly oriented photos

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between flipping and rotating an image?

Flipping creates a mirror reflection — like holding the image in front of a mirror. Rotating turns the image by an angle (90°, 180°, 270°) without creating a mirror effect.

Why does text appear backwards in my selfie?

Front-facing cameras on phones often show a "mirror preview" — what you see is a mirror image of yourself. When the photo is saved, some apps keep the mirror orientation, making text and logos appear backwards. A horizontal flip fixes this.

Will the image quality change after flipping?

No. Flipping is lossless — it only changes the geometric orientation of pixels, not their values. If you download as PNG, there is zero quality loss. JPEG download may re-compress slightly.

Can I flip and rotate at the same time?

Yes. Apply a flip first, then use our Image Rotate tool to also rotate the image if needed. You can also flip both horizontally and vertically for the same result as a 180° rotation.
