What is Image Metadata?

Image metadata is hidden information embedded within image files alongside the visible pixels. The most common type is EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) data — recorded automatically by cameras and smartphones. EXIF can include GPS coordinates, device model, date and time of capture, camera settings, and even the photographer's name. AI-generated images also embed metadata: the generation tool name (Midjourney, DALL-E, Stable Diffusion), prompt used, model version, and seed values. This metadata is invisible when viewing the image but is accessible to anyone who inspects the file — including social media platforms, search engines, and recipients.

Why Remove Image Metadata?

Privacy & Security

  • • EXIF GPS data reveals exactly where a photo was taken
  • • Location data in photos poses safety risks for children
  • • Metadata reveals your device model and OS for fingerprinting
  • • Remove home address embedded in photos before sharing online

AI & Professional Use

  • • Remove AI generation tags from Midjourney/DALL-E images
  • • Clean images before submitting to platforms with AI policies
  • • Reduce file size by stripping unnecessary metadata
  • • Standardise images for professional publishing workflows

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. 1

    Upload your image(s)

Click or drag your JPG, PNG, or WebP images into the upload area. Batch processing is supported.

  2. 2

    Review embedded metadata

The tool shows you what metadata is currently embedded — EXIF, GPS, camera info, AI tags.

  3. 3

    Strip metadata

Click Remove Metadata. All EXIF data and AI generation tags are removed from the image.

  4. 4

    Download clean image

Download the cleaned image. The visual content is identical — only the hidden metadata is removed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does removing metadata change the visual image?

No. Metadata is separate from the pixel data. Removing it has no effect on how the image looks — the colours, sharpness, and content remain exactly the same.

Will the file size change?

Yes, slightly. Metadata can add a few KB to a file. After removal, the file will be marginally smaller. For JPEGs, re-saving without metadata can reduce size by 1-50 KB depending on how much metadata was embedded.

What AI image tags are removed?

The tool removes metadata fields used by AI image generators — including XMP tags from Midjourney, DALL-E, Stable Diffusion, and other tools. This includes prompt text, model version, seed, and generation tool identification.

Is my photo location data always present?

GPS location is embedded only if location access was enabled on your camera or phone when the photo was taken. Most modern smartphones embed GPS by default unless you disable location access for the camera app.

Are my images private when using this tool?

Yes. All metadata removal happens in your browser using JavaScript. Your images never leave your device.
